The higher national diploma (HND) in Business is equivalent to the second year of university study, and consists of one non-specialist general business pathway and five specialist pathways that concentrate on a particular aspect of business studies.

These pathways are designed to support progression into relevant occupational areas or complete your Bachelor’s degree. There are seven units to be covered in Level 5 (one 30 – credits unit and six 15 – credits units) with a total of 120 credits a year of full time studies. For the part-time students, the programme is delivered over two evenings per week. The duration of the programme is 4 terms which is equivalent to one year and three months of study.

 

To complete your HNC and HND programmes as a full-time student it will take you two years, and as a part-time student – two years and six months accordingly.

BTEC MODE OF STUDY AND ASSESSMENT

During your course of study, you will be required to supplement the classroom-based education with independent study in the form of research, homework tasks or group work. Self-study is vital to your success in this course, and lecturers will guide you throughout the study period on how best to approach independent study.

 

You will develop the practical and managerial skills required to work in the Business sector and gain transferable skills such as research skills, verbal and non-verbal communication, teamwork, problem solving and analytical skills.

 

No formal examinations are required for the course. Assessments of the BTEC Business are undertaken in various ways such as writing assignments, analysing case studies, delivering presentations, completing portfolios of evidence or writing reports.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Holders of the BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Business will have developed a sound understanding of the principles underlying their field of study and will have learned to apply those principles more widely. They will have learned to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems. They will be able to perform effectively in their chosen field and will have the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making.

 

WHERE COULD THE BTEC LEVEL 5 HND IN BUSINESS TAKE YOU?

Once you have completed the course, you can convert your Business HND into a full Bachelor’s Degree by taking a final year programme at City University College awarded by Ulster University. You can also choose various universities around the UK and worldwide who will consider HND graduates from City University College for their degree programme.

 

Alternatively, you can move directly to the workplace, seeking a career in business in roles such as a business manager, accountant, finance officer or human resources specialist. Your HND is recognised by employers worldwide.
